Treating Toothaches
What are toothaches?
Toothaches are usually caused by tooth decay or infected gums, and result in a sharp, throbbing, or constant pain around the teeth. Sometimes, toothaches may also be accompanied by swollen gums, a headache, or a fever.
How should toothaches be treated?
You should visit a dentist for a proper examination and treatment to prevent the condition from worsening. This should be done as soon as possible, especially if your toothache is severe and lasts for more than a day, or if the toothache results in a fever.
What can be done to relieve the pain?
You may take over-the-counter oral pain medications such as paracetamol or pharmacy-only painkillers like ibuprofen for relief.
How can toothaches be prevented?
Good oral hygiene helps to prevent tooth decay which is what triggers toothaches. Make it a habit to brush your teeth with fluoride-containing toothpaste, especially after meals. Flossing and gargling regularly will also help as well.
